Bagthorpe Farm is certified by the Soil Association for its 80% of land which is farmed organically. We are also LEAF marque certified which covers all our farm activities including our small conventionally cropped area. We are 100% committed to farming in a sustainable and beneficial way for the environment, wildlife, soil and our consumers.
Bagthorpe Organic area
We first started to convert our land into organic production back in 1985, when Tid Morton decided that the poor soils he inherited on taking over the family farm in 1978 needed to be managed in a more natural way in order to reap the most benefit. Organic farming seeks to work with nature, rather than against it, to improve bio-diversity, soil quality, animal welfare and ultimately the quality of the produce.
We operate a nine year rotation, 4 of which are fertility building clover leys which promote micro-biological activity in the soil and fix nitrogen. As a result we have seen a small increase in organic matter which has been traditionally low in our soils.
